KID BROTHERBaby faced
Bobby-Deol.lkc">
Bobby Deol had two family successes to live up to. That of his father Dharmendra, and elder brother
Sunny Deol. His father is a living legend of the film industry, and his brother Sunny has seen amazing success.
Bobby has a softer persona, a modern look compared to the rest of the family.
Maybe because of that, his first movie was a romantic
Barsaat opposite Twinkle Khanna. It was produced by the Deol's and directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi. The movie was about two college kids who fall in love but are kept forcibly apart by the girl's father. The freshness of the pair, and the love story clicked with the audiences and it was a mini-hit.
Gupt was
Bobby's next movie with the talented
Kajol and beautiful
Manisha Koirala. This Rajiv Rai thriller had everyone around
Bobby getting killed. When his lady love Manisha's life is also threatened,
Bobby has to find out who is killing all these people. The movie was a hit. There were several good songs picturised in exotic locales to keep people entertained.
THIRD TIME LUCKYHis very next was Abbas
Mastan's
Soldier with the bubbly
Preity Zinta. Here
Bobby was a mercenary soldier on a mission. The movie was shot in Australia and had several hit songs. This movie was again a hit. The baby Deol was a success. He had three hit movies in a row. Looked like the audiences had given its stamp of approval to the curly haired
Bobby.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra's
Kareeb starred Neha with
Bobby-Deol.lkc">
Bobby Deol in a hill-romance fresh on the heels of 1942 a
Love Story. It was again a love story. But it flopped. The Deol brothers appeared in a family romance,
Dillagi, where the brothers unwittingly fall for the same girl. Despite being a decent entertainer, the movie flopped.
MODERATE HITS AND MAJOR FLOPS
Raj Kanwar directed
Badal with
Bobby and Rani. It was set in the backdrop of the 1984 riots, and
Bobby plays a hardhearted terrorist here. This movie was a semi-hit. This was the first time he was playing an out and out toughie. In a similar mould was Guddu Dhanoa's
Bichcho, with the same pair, Rani and
Bobby. This movie too was an average hit.
In 2001, the year when big brother Sunny was creating gadar at the Box Office with
Gadar, younger brother had an ok year. His
Aashiq with
Karishma Kapoor, went unloved. His Abbas-
Mastan movie,
Ajnabee with sis
Kareena Kapoor was fresh and intriguing. It was supposed to be based on the concept of wife-swapping, which was ofcourse, an eyewash. It was actually a murder thriller.
Bobby wore glasses to look more mature for this role and the movie was a small hit.
Kranti was lost after release.
23rd March 1931: Shaheed, was trounced at tbe Box Office. There had been a spate of Bhagat Singh movies, and this one too, was a victim of overkill. Abbas
Mastan's
Humraaz had
Bobby playing a victim of conspiracy. It was a slick thriller with lots of good songs. The movie was a hit.
Bobby tried his hand at comedy with David Dhawan's
Chor Machaye Shor, but the movie flopped. 2004 was a bad year too, with
Kismet, Bardasasht and Ab Tumhare Hawale Vatan Saathio flopping.
SENSITIVE SOLDIERFlops were dogging
Bobby. Sure,
Tango Charlie was a flop too. It was a war movie of sorts. Mani Ratnam's movie tried to look into the lives of the soldiers. Not high ranking, heavily decorated soldiers, but a rookie BSF jawan and the emotional upheavels, trials and tribulations they face. The movie was actually well made, and as it happens sometimes with good movies, it did not catch the immediate attention of movie goers and was deemed a flop. It remains one of
Bobby's best performances, as a softhearted but tough soldier.
His
Naalyak was a nalayak at box office too.
Dosti.lkc">Dosti was unfriendly,
Humko tumse pyar hai, met with a resounding NO.
LATEST Suneel Darshan's
Shaklaka Boom Boom was supposed to be a romantic musical, but it did not do well. This wasnt a big movie, it was made with small stars. Similarly,
Naqab got mixed reviews and did average business. But
Jhoom Barabar Jhoom had big stars. Abhishek and Preity along with Lara and
Bobby. On top of that it was from the Yash Raj banner. It was supposed to sweep the Box Office. However, a badly made film is just that.. and rarely succeeds, no matter what the banner and who the stars.
Deol family's first outing together, Anil Sharma's
Apne, has been one of the big hits of 2007. This redeems
Bobby's position.
Nanhe Jaisalmer focuses on a kid, but
Bobby plays the kid's idol and the movie has got good reviews.
GOSSSSSIPPapa Dharmendra had a rocking life and big brother Sunny had his share of gossip dogging him.
Bobby is married to Tanya Ahuja and has two children. There is no unsavory gossip chasing him.
He has worked with
Preity Zinta twice, in
Soldier and JBJ. She has been his long time friend and vouches for his decent behaviour.
