A Slice of Reality |
| The Story: |
Silsila (Kunal Khemu) keeps track of sqatters at a traffic signal and protects the interests of his boss and picks up hafta on his behalf. The movie looks at various characters that people this traffic signal. A prostitute, a drug addict who is her pimp, a tea-boy called tsunami, rani who sells gujarati clothes. In short, the underbelly of a city we usually view through the car window as we whiz past.
The Feel: Only Madhur Bhandarkar can give you a love story off the footpath. This movie brings lively characters who make up what we call life. The actors have all picked up honorable mentions for good work and the music is very catchy with several ghazals by Jagjit Singh. People looking for blockbuster drama should avoid it. People who like good cinema will watch it.
The Spiel: Madhur Bhandarkar’s movies make up for the sad lack of good cinema and have created a different genre of chatty, everyday kind of reality. His movies deal primarily with the people trying to cope with life in metros. It isn’t as serious as a Satyajit Ray movie, but isn’t your run of the mill potboiler or an inane comedy either. His movies have touched a chord with the viewers who flock to his kind of cinema.
