CHOCOLATE FACE
Shahid Kapur(b.25/2/81) comes from a family with a solid background in acting. His father Pankaj Kapur is one of the best actors of bollywood. His mother, Neelima Azim is a theatre/TV actor of repute and also a classical dancer. His parents divorced when he was three years old and he stayed with his mother.
In 1998 two big things happened to him. He was still just 17 and got to star in a popular Pepsi Commercial with Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee and Kajol. Soon later he featured in a music video by Aryans. His childhood friend, Ahmed Khan choreographed the song, and his college buddy Hrishita Bhatt was there too. This song and video - Ankhon me tera hi chehra, was very popular.
He joined the Shaimak Davar school of dance and was a member of his troupe too. He has appeared in dances in movies like Taal and Dil to Pagal Hai.
GREAT START
He went to audition for a new movie that Ken Ghosh was casting for, Ishq Vishq Pyar Vyar. Ken told him he was looking for a fresh faced young man with a man's body. Shahid took this very seriously and started working out in a gym. When he went back to Ken with a pumped up body, Ken was impressed and decided to cast him in the lead role. He co-starred here with sugar-sweet Amrita Rao and spicy Shenaz Tresurywala. This college romance was a big hit among youngsters. Shahid was touted as the next Shahrukh Khan and won many debut awards.
However, he had to hit a lean patch as there were not many roles out there for a young 22 year old boy.
His next starrer was Ken Ghosh's next Fida. His co-stars here were Fardeen and Kareena. This movie had several rocking songs - Aaaja re Mahi, Nazar Nazar, Maine jis ko chaha mil gaya. The movie was a semi hit.
Dil Maange More was another young movie with Soha Ali Khan and Ayesha Takia. Again some rocking songs like Gustakh Dil tere liye. The movie did ok business, not a big hit or anything.
STRUGGLE AHEAD
Deewane Hue Paagal was a comedy along the lines of There is Something About Mary with a twist. This Vikram Bhatt movie starred many heavyweights like Sunil Shetty and Akshay Kumar. The movie did not do too well in the cinema halls though it was run endlessly and successfully on many TV channels later.
Vaah! Life ho to Aisi had Sanjay Dutt playing an angel of death in a yellow suit and a vintage Chevvy. Shahid was a poor young man trying to make ends meet and run his orphanage, who is bumped off by the Angel. This Mahesh Manjrekar film was shot in High Definition format, the first for a hindi film and had a lot of special effects. The movie was again a comedy that was fairly well made but bombed at the box office.
Shikhar was a serious film by John Mathew Mathan. It examined greed and temptation in corporate world. Shahid co-starred with Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu and Amrita Rao. The movie did not do well though Shahid's performance was applauded. It was a change from playing a teenager in love.
ROMANCE
36 China Town was a mystery romance by Abbas Mastan. He was here with Kareena and Akshay Kumar. The movie was a hit of sorts with plenty of hit songs. 24x7 I think of you, Tanha jiya na jaaye, dede dil china town me.
Chup Chup Ke was another Shahid-Kareena starrer which did average business. In this Priyadarshan movie Kareena plays a dumb girl who falls for a pretend deaf and dumb played by Shahid. Apart from Kareena and Shahid, the movie also had Suniel Shetty.
Vivah was a biggie. It was an Aditya Barjatya offering and as per their prescription too. Amrita plays a virginal small town girl so pure that she calls water 'Jal' and asks Shahid not to drink cold water when he sniffles. Shahid also plays a reserved young man who would not even hold the hand of the girl he is betrothed to. The movie moves at a slow pace and at the last moment, Amrita's face gets burnt in an accident. Shahid has the option of breaking off the engagement as the girl is now disfigured. Well, you can watch the movie to see what the outcome is. The movie was a blockbuster hit.
CURRENT NEWS
Fool and Final was made by Ahmed Khan, Shahid's childhood friend and the choreographer of his first ever music video. The movie did not do well despite being a rocking comedy.
Jab We Met is running across cinema halls to a great response. This is Imtiaz Ali's second movie after Socha Na Tha. The movie is a road romance, where a couple of runaways fall in love travelling across the country. A viviacious girl - Geet (Kareena) rescues a despondant Aditya (Shahid) who is on verge of comitting suicide. Kareena and Shahid are getting a lot of applause for their great performance.
Shahid is still a young guy and is a good performer. His chocolate baby looks are giving away to a mature face, which should help him in his quest for stardom.
GOSSSSSIP
Shahid has been around hot and happening young heroines a lot. Amrita Rao has been his steady co-star. He has co-starred with the hot Ayesha Takia, Soha Ali Khan, the MTV vj Shenaz Treasurywala, besides getting cosy with Bipasha in Shikhar.
But his declared girlfriend so far was Kareena Kapoor. They were quite an item, they were seen together all the time and were even caught smooching on an MMS. Kareena turned vegetarian for him and he used to hang out a lot with her family too. He played quite and uncle to Karishma's baby as well. But suddenly, right before the release of Jab We Met, they split and Kareena is now allegedly seeing Saif Ali Khan.
Well, such is life. A young and successful Shahid wont lack girls surely.
