Desi Idol is a popular singing contest in New Jersey.
The price is $25k and there are plenty of eager contestents hoping to win it. Some
by their talent, some by manipulation. There is a remorseless socialite. Shabana
Azmi, who wants to upstage a a rival. There is the immensely talented and protected
Preeti Patel who looks like a surefire winner. There is a sound parrot Sania Rehman
who understands no hindi. There is a guy who can reel statistics at the drop of
the hat. There is a sikh who wants to be the next Bhangra hiphop star. AND there
is a gora who wants to be the next Idol and faces discrimination. He is accompanied
by his indian girlfriend (Ayesha Dharkar).

| The Spiel: |
The movie keeps you in splits, it delights totally. The name 'Loin King' comes from the sponsor of the show who
has made his fortune importing Loin steaks. There is comedy and suspense. Pinkbee
was kept on the edge of the seat wondering WHO will be the next loin idol. The end
was a surprise, and all pinkbee will give away was - LOVE wins. |
| The Feel: |
Although
the feel is totally NRI, being based in a hotel in New Jersey, all Indians will
identify with this movie. There are no songs here, barring what the contestents
sing. The movie lasts for only 1.1/2 hours, in keeping with the hollywoodian tradtion,
and new trends in bollywood too. Shabana Azmi, as usual puts in a magnificent performance
as the ruthless socialite. Watch out for the moment when the docile Preeti Patel (pretty Ishita Sharma) speaks.
