VANILLA PASTRY

This fair faced progeny of Babita and Randhir Kapoor burst on the silver screen alongwith Bachchan Junior, Abhishek in JP Dutta's Refugee.  The movie did not do too well, but Kareena was lapped up by producers hungry for pretty young faces.. for the movies, of course!

While she dressed like a village belle in Refugee, she got to wear modern clothes in Satish Kaushik's Mujhe Kuchch Kehna Hai.  Her co-star was another bollywood kid, Tusshar Kapoor, son of Jeetendra.  The movie was a sweet little tale about a young man who is too shy to express his feelings for a girl.  The lilting songs, the smart dresses, dances appealed to the youngsters and the movie became a runaway hit.

BIG LEAGUE

Kareena went into the big league directly.  Her next movie was an ambitious movie by Subhash Ghai, Yadein where she co-starred with none other than Hritik Roshan, who was very very hot post his debut.  The movie was a meandering tale of romance and family ties.  It did dismal business in India, overseas, it was a smash hit.

Asoka was another prestigious project, with Shahrukh at the helm.  A historical film on the great king of yesteryers.  Kareena had a sexy role here, that of a girl Asoka falls for while in exile.
She crooned Raat ka nasha abhi. But the viewers did not like the movie much and gave it a thumbs down.

NO STRANGER TO SUCCESS

That is bollywood for you.  Sometimes a hyped movie flops on its face, and a small movie becomes a success.  Ajnabi was an Abbas Mastan film, a murder thriller. Kareena co-starred with Bobby Deol, with Akshay Kumar and Bipasha Basu forming the other pair.  The movie did good business.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was Karan Johar's lavishly mounted family drama.  Kareena formed a young pair with Hritik.  Her 'Poo' short for Pooja, was played with oodles of attitude, designer clothes and rocking songs - Keh do na keh do na, you are my soniya - was the disco song with Hritik.

BAD SPELL

Mujse Dosti Karogi, Kunal Kohli's first film had a good line up of actors. Hritik, Rani and Kareena.  But the movie was seen as a slow one, and it flopped. Jeena Sirf Mere Liye tried to recapture the hit jodi of Kareena and Tusshar. But the audience said NO. Talash and Khushi were nixed too.

Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon was from the Barjatya camp with Kareena, Hritik and Abhishek.  The impressive line up and the Barjatya magic did nothing for the movie which merely annoyed, quite like the CGI parrot in the movie.

LOC Kargil was a commendable effort, but too lengthy and did not appeal to the audiences.  However, it was a war film and such movies have a big shelf life.  It may not be an immediate hit, but is circulated a lot on TV networks.

CRITICAL SUCCESS

Up next was  a small, almost art house film with Rahul Bose, Chameli.  Kareena was lauded for her performance as a street prostitute.  Dev was a Govind Nahlani film with Amitabh and Fardeen.  Another critical success.

In Fida she starred with her then boyfriend, Shahid Kapur and Fardeen Khan.  The movie was a well made thriller and appreciated.

Aitraaz was seen as more of a Priyanka Chopra film who played a negetive role.  But Kareena was the savitri here, a dutiful wife who sticks by her troubled husband, Akshay Kumar.

MIXED BAG

Hulchul was a rollicking comedy with Akshay Khanna which did quite well.  In Bewafaa Kareena was pitted against Akshay and Anil Kapoor. She plays a woman who is torn between her duty to her husband, Anil Kapoor and her love for her former boyfriend, Akshay Kumar.

In Kyon Ki, she played a doctor who tries to bring back a mental patient traumatised by the death of his wife.  The movie was quite like the earlier Rajesh Khanna-Waheeda Rahman starrer Khamoshi.lkc">Khamoshi. She co-starred here with Salman Khan.  But the movie did thanda business at the box office.

Dosti with Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol was a bit like the Madhuri-Salman-Sanjay Dutt starrer Saajan. But it sank into oblivion, unlike its original.

36 China Town enjoyed success, being an Abbas Mastaan thriller.  Here again, Kareena was paired with Shahid.

Chup Chup Ke with Shahid flopped despite Kareena playing a dumb girl.

JEWEL IN THE CROWN

Omkara was Vishal Bhardwaj's take on Shakespere's Othello.  It was much more ambitious than his first venture.  It had big stars like Ajay Devgan, Saif, Viveck, Kareena, Konkona Sen, Bipasha Basu.  Kareena was like a jewel in this magnificient crown.  She played Desdemona with an insouciance that was amazing.  It was a great role for a good actress, and she excelled in it.

CURRENT NEWS

Jab We Met (2007) is the latest movie of Kareena's.  She co-stars with Shahid here.  The movie is like the Pooja Bhatt-Amir Khan starrer Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahi.  Kareena plays a loud Punjaban who barges into the life of a despondent Shahid who is recovering from a heartbreak.  Kareena has a boyfriend and a guy her parents are trying to marry her off to.  They have to hit the road to reach Bhatinda, where Kareena lives and on the way, love happens.  The movie is being very well received and looks like a surefire hit.

GOSSSSSIP

Kareena has dated a few guys in the past. But her romance with Shahid Kapur was very public.

They were once caught on the MMS as they were kissing. It turned into a huge scandal.

Kareena became a vegetarian as Shahid is one too.

While shooting for Tashan she was thrown in the company of Saif Ali Khan a lot.  She split with Shahid and is now dating Saif.
